The APP fragment FLHQERMDVCETHLHWHTVAK comprises a copper(II)-binding site. Binding of Cu(II) to the peptide induced oxidation of the cysteine and intermolecular dimerization of the peptide. The reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) by APP may enhance the production of hydroxyl radicals which in turn may contribute to neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease.
